FROM THE WORKSHOP

DA HAT DER TOPF EIN LOCH AM ENDE
EINE LIEBESGESCHICHTE

With reciter Ingrid Sanne and her ensemble (violin, piano) I am working on a „literal musical reading“ with a text being a linguistical equivalent to Gertrude Stein’s great monologue „As a wife has a cow a love story“.
For me the attempt of a german reading („Lesart“) and not a translation by Oskar Pastior and Sissi Tax of „Ein Buch Mit Da Hat Der Topf Ein Loch Am Ende Eine Liebesgeschichte“ is a re-encounter. In 1991 I composed the original for Sprech-Gesangstimme and ensemble. In the scope of 42nd festival NEUE MUSIK LÜNEBURG the premiere of the german version will take place on October 10. 2016 at Glockenhaus Lüneburg.

FALSTAFF-SUITE Nr. 1 for large orchestra

From 1984 composed ballet „John Falstaff“ in two acts I currently make from the first act a suite for large orchestra. The score will be published by Peermusic Classical Hamburg.

THE BOAR’S – HEAD TAVERN for large orchestra.

One movement of Falstaff-Suite No. 1 has the title „The Boar’s head-tavern“. This part can be performed independently. The battle of words between Prince Henry and John Falstaff were transfigured in the choreography by Heinz Spoerli and Jürgen Rose into a boozing competition. With a continous ragtime played on a prepared piano out of tune („Wanzenklavier“) and on a bouteillophone the music refers to this scene. The work will be performed in 2017 by Caspar Richter.

5 HAIKUS FOR ACCORDEON

For „Festival Neue Musik Lüneburg“ I am composing „5 Haikus“ for accordeon. As a motto each piece will have a Haiku poem. The 5 little compositions are organized in New Year, spring, summer, autumn and winter. On 19th of October 2015 Christine Brückner will perform the premiere at Glockenhaus in the city of Lüneburg.

BONUS UND MALA

The musical comedy for 4 actors and small circus band (3 woodwinds, piano, bass, drums) ist the result of a co-operation with songtexter Bernhard Laux and composer collegues Niels Frederic Hoffmann and René Mense. Dialogues are written by Bernhard Asche. The comedy bases on the financial crisis. Banker and gambler Bonus Boni wants to win the heart of financial supported „Hartz 4“ living Mala. Not easy. The state supports Bonus to have peace in the cardboard. But this time the crises is on the side of Mala and provides assistance.

From April 18 – 24 the performaces will take place at „Die Burg“ in Hamburg. More performances will be in Hamburg and Berlin.

KALIF STORCH

For his new project „Music for children’s and family concerts“ music publisher Ries & Erler Berlin has commissioned me to compose a music for narrator and orchestra. It complies to my long-cherished desire to compose a music for the fairy tale „Kalif Storch“ („Calif Stork“) by Wilhelm Hauff. Composer and writer Niels Frederic Hoffmann and myself have made a text version from the original for performances. The dancelike music is also suited to a fairy tale ballet.

FUNK 4 FUN

From „Posaunenwerk der evangelischen Kirche Kurhessen Waldeck“ I got a commission to compose a dancelike music for brass. „Funk4fun“ for 8 trumpetes, 6 trombones and 1 tuba will be performed in September 2012 in Kassel.

EIN FESTE BURG

From „Posaunenwerk der evangelischen Kirche Kurhessen Waldeck“ I got a commission to compose a music for brass. The commission is subject to the condition of using a chorale melody by Martin Luther. „Ein feste Burg – Choralvariationen für Blechbläser“ („Ein feste Burg – Choral variations for brass“) will be played from two corresponding brass choirs. The first one play open, the other one with mutes. The music is scored for 8 trumpets, 6 trombones and 1 tuba. The music will be performed in September 2012 in Kassel.

NACHTMUSIK

Ensemble Acht“ from Hamburg has commisioned me to write a chamber music. The music should be composed „inspired by the theme of the fourth mouvement of Johannes Brahms Symphony No. 1 (Allegro non troppo ma con brio)“. The work composed for clarinet, french horn, viola, violoncello and double bass entitled „Nachtmusik“ (Night music) will be performed at 27th and 28th of April 2012 in Hamburg.

3 CAPRICCI

For „Trio Altrove“ from Florence I continue to compose three caprices. After finishing the „Capriccio No.1 per flauto e chitarra“, 2009 performed in Hamburg and published by Peerclassical Hamburg I have just finished „Capriccio No. 2 per clarinetto e chitarra“. „Capriccio No.3 per flauto, clarinetto e chitarra“ will follow. All caprices are based on a succession of tonal harmonies which repeat itself as a reminiscence. The premiere of the complete cycle will be in 2012/2013 in Florence.

VOCALISE

For singer Frauke Aulbert, violin player Maja Hunziker and piano player Thorsten Kuhn I have made a new version of the original „Vocalise“ for voice, alto saxophone and piano. The premiere is on 20th of August 2011 in Hamburg.

In addition to that will be broadcasted excerpts from my „Tender Buttons – ein poetisches Musiktheater“.

STREIK BEI MANNESMANN

Musicologist Dr. Beate Kutschke will held a lecture about the scenical cantata „Streik bei Mannesmann“ January 2011 in London. Composed 1973 the cantata was a co-operative work by Dietrich Boeckle, Niels Frederic Hoffmann, Thomas Jahn, Luca Lombardi and Wilfried Steinbrenner under the artistic supervision of Hans Werner Henze. More information see menue „List of works/ works in co-operation.

STANZA FIVE POINT EIGHT

Berlin flute player Beate Gabriela Schmitt and sound ingeneer and composer Thomas Seelig have produced a CD of „Stanza five point eight“ for computer - aided bass-, contrabass- and subcontrabass flute. The composition was premiered in Seoul. CHORALVORSPIEL From „Posaunenwerk der evangelischen Kirche Kurhessen Waldeck“ I get the commission to compose a chorale introduction about the choral melody „Die Nacht ist vorgedrungen“ (text by Jochen Klepper, melody by Johannes Petzold) for brass. The introduction is released in the book „Kurhessisches Bläserheft 2008“ with a CD.

ORTE UND ZEITEN/TEMPI E LUOGHI

In his ballet „The Great Mess“ with music by Mozart choreographer Uwe Scholz included two pieces from my song cycle „Orte und Zeiten/ tempi e luoghi“: „Viele Länder durchfuhr ich“ (Catull) and „Zeit und Zeiten“ (Bernhard Laux). Under the title „The Great Mess“ record company Naxos released the ballet for DVD. On their South America tour in September 2011 „Leipziger Ballett“ performed „The Great Mess“ at the „Teatro Major“ in Bogotá (Columbia) and at the „Teatro Municipal“ in Sao Paulo (Brazil). In January 2012 they perform it twice in Leipzig. Later performances will be 2013 in Bilbao, Pamplona, Madrid and Valladolid.
